Today I did something novel – I plugged in my iPod, and set it to shuffle all songs. Why is that weird? Well, when I bought my iPod Nano last year, I got the 16GB one, thinking I wouldn’t fill it up. But I did. 16GB of music, yet I listen to the same three or four albums all the time. So today, I let it just play anything, and you know what I discovered? I have a lot of really cool music.
Back in “the day”, you had a record, cassette tape or CD collection (we won’t even mention eight-tracks… shudder). You lugged around a few of the tapes or CDs to play in your car or walkman/discman. But you always had a physical reminder of which albums you had. With the digital age, people have no idea of how many songs they have. For example, in iTunes, I have over 23GB of songs and videos. It works out to about 350 CDs. Can I name all of the artists? No way. And I rarely by music, so I am sure most people have even more than that.
My point is that I have so much music, yet all I can think about is the new CD coming out next week. We tend to want and buy
the newest thing, be it a movie, music, clothes, or technology. Then after the newness has worn off, we shelve it and look to the next new thing. With the economy causing people to tighten up their budget, now is the time to pull out all of the fun toys that we have forgotten about, and give them new life. As I type, a song comes on that I used to listen to 15 years ago. I loved it, and played it obsessively for months. But I could not tell you the last time I played it.
If you have outgrown that music, movie, clothing? Then get rid of it. Give it to your friends, or the Salvation Army. Sell it on ebay. Someone else may want your discards, and it is just taking up space in your life. You may be surprised what your kids think of your old stuff. My sister, who is 24, primarily listens to Classic Rock music, most of which is almost twice her age. The 80′s are having a revival (I know, I can’t understand it either). Some of the big names from the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s are still big, if a little rough around the edges. So whip out that old Rolling Stones record, and rock out.
Question: What music did you listen to that you are embarrased to admit? (It’s ok Osmond fans – we’ll only laugh a little…)

This is so true, we forget about how much great stuff we have. In my case over half of my ipod is filled with marketing and sales training so it is hard to shuffle all…

Ok, I loved Kris Kristofferson…maybe the voice was a little rough but he wrote some fine songs. I had every album he ever put out.
And you are right about donating old stuff. I love books on tape, but once you’ve listened to them, do you ever listen to them again? My sister told me that they love to have them for groups that are teach English as a Second Language…so I have donated my old ones and now I feel less guilty when I splurge on a stack of them…even though I buy them second hand at half-price books!

True, maybe we should give one thing away for every new thing we get.

Michelle, What a great way of looking at ‘free’ music… recycle to what you already have! …
Considering you have about 350 CDs of music… figure the average CD is 40 minutes long… is 14,400 minutes of music… or 233 hours or nearly 10 straight days 24/7 of music without repeating anything!…

I kind of like that idea of giving away something for every new thing we get.
What music am I embarrassed to admit that I listened to….yes, indeed it was the Osmond Brothers. I used to think their song “Crazy Horses” was the greatest song ever.
When you’re 8 years old you’re convinced you’re right & everyone else is wrong.
I have never heard that song on the radio since. Perhaps I was wrong about it’s greatness.

Oh, um, crush on Andy Gigg and Shaun Cassidy in the day. I can probably still sing along to The Bay City Rollers, “Saturday Night!” On the weird artsy side, Lena Lovich. I have eclectic taste. I also grew up listening to a collection of Waltz music. Destined for romantic dancing, clearly.

What do you mean you can’t understand the 80′s revival?!!!! I love the 80′s! It’s funny because my daughter loves 80′s music too. She plugged her ipod into my car stereo the other day and she had all these great 80′s tunes on there. Cyndi Lauper is one of her favorites.

In that case, I was more referring to clothing. As a child of the 80′s, I have quite a few 80′s songs that I enjoy… Just don’t admit to often.

I almost died when my nephew asked what a record was… As for music…yes, the 80′s should stay in the 80′s unless it’s a high school reunion. However, the big hair bands had a few that i would hate to admit to. Recently we had a “love shack” revival as my kids heard it and loved it.

this is a great post.
I am such an impulse buyer!!!! I go to best buy and end up leaving with 5 CD’s and I already have an ipod filled with video and audio that could last me years.
I like how you listen to songs.
Some times I will listen to a song all day when it is new because i like it so much

I’ve noticed that the “sound” of the 80′s is making a comeback in today’s music. Lady GaGa sounds just like 80′s music. And that is awesome. Hopefully RAP will finally die.

The only music I can say I’m embarrassed to admit listening to was Milli Vanilli. But c’mon, I was in high school and they were IT! I owned their album…

Hmmm…. I don’t listen to my iPod – I like music but ….
Instead, I really like my Kindle! In addition to the books I read, I also upload inspirational audio tapes, K. Hogan IM course audio and doc material and sail away. I also like my Kindle ’cause it can read to me when my eyes hurt . So I always feel I’m using my time well and learning….
But viva la musica!

The shuffle feature reminds us of all the stuff we have lying around that we end up forgetting about. Just today (before reading your post) I did the same thing with my iPhone, hit the shuffle feature for exactly the same reason.
