Do you sit at home, bored, trying to figure out what to do? Have you lived in your town for years, yet go to the same couple of places, and never adventure outside of your comfort zone? Well, there is a free resource in pretty much every town in the US, and probably the world. It is the Chamber of Commerce.
Through the Chamber of Commerce, you can get a list of all of the attractions your town has to offer. For example, I just registered with The Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau to be sent information ranging from tourist attractions, hiking, fishing, golfing, to amusement parks, museums, casinos, etc. They usually also send coupons and offers as an incentive to get you to visit these places. You can do this for neighboring towns, as well, to keep in the loop. Or, if you are planning a vacation or to move to a new location, this is a great resource. Just google your town’s name and Chamber of Commerce, or look them up in the phone book and give them a call.
My family moved to Colorado Springs 20 years ago, yet I have barely scratched the surface of the activities that are available in this town. I hope, through subscribing to their monthly email, I will find out about some truly special spots and activities that I am sure exist. For example, every year there is a rubber duckie race down a large creek that runs through town. And the neighboring town hosts a coffin race every Halloween! As I discover these fun activities in my town, I will share them with you. Hopefully you will do the same – just fill out the contact form, and let me know what is going on in your town!

There are so many places to go here in Northern California but I find myself going to the same places over and over again. Thanks for the idea of going to the chamber of commerce.
As a side note I have found when out of town engaging the locals for a while will get them to give up some unknown spots. The last time I was on Oahu I found the local golf course that was better than the $300 a round spot. All I had to do was to get the guy to laugh.

I had some friends coming from Japan to visit me long ago and I couldn’t think of what to do to entertain them while they were with me in the States. I finally when to the tourist office and couldn’t believe all the stuff we could do and see and a lot of it was free. Because I lived there I never thought to go into the tourist office but there was all kinds of stuff that I had forgotten about or didn’t know about right in my city.

In the summer Minneapolis has lots of activites associated with the Aquatennial (parades, milk carton boat races, arts and crafts shows, dances, ets) and in the winter St Paul has the Winter Carnival with the same sorts of things …

Living where the largest shopping mall in the world is located, well, it’s somewhere mostly all visitors want to visit at least once. And kids love the amusement park in the middle of it.
I get the Explore Minnesota magazine every year too. It’s filled with stuff to do and places/things to see – like the world’s largest ball of twine!

My husband and I have seen most of the historic tourist attractions in our town since we moved here 6 years ago. The reason is that when out of town guests come to visit and want to see the area, we take them! Also, many of the school fieldtrips go to these spots. If you know anything about the pilgrims, John and Pricilla Alden’s house is here in town, and the Myles Standish Monument is here as well. Just south of here in Plymouth is the replica of the Mayflower, Plymouth Plantation, Plymouth rock, etc.

The chambers are full of information about their areas and want people to utlize them. They are a great resourse and are under used.
I think the Chamber of Commerce is a great idea but you need to ask the right questions. we have had some good luck and also some horror stories but overall it is a great resource.
