This morning I woke up and it was snowing. Yes, it is April 23rd, and it was snowing. Welcome to Colorado. I looked at the Zodiac signs for spring, and wasn’t surprised to see that both Aries and Taurus people tend to weather rough patches well. If they live in Colorado, they are used to the spastic nature of Spring, so they have a lot of practice.
In the spirit of the weather, I thought I would list some of the fun and free things to do on a Snow Day.
The Classics – Channel Your Inner Child (For Free):
- Snowball Fight – Everyone’s favorite activity, if you have a group of people. This is a great activity if you are tired of being cooped up in the house, and a good way to get out the aggression you may have towards someone, in a slightly less violent way.
- Snow Forts – Fun to build, and may be useful when the snowball fight breaks out
- Snowman, Women, Families – I enjoy driving past houses that have snowpeople built in the yard. They linger long after the regular snow has melted, extending the fun.
- Snow Angels – Laying in the snow? Fun, fun, fun… cold. This is a great first activity, but be prepared to run back in the house after your butt freezes.
- Sledding – Find a hill close to your house, and have at it.
- Take a Walk as the Snow is Falling – When it is really snowing, it is so quiet, it is magical (and a little creepy). This could be a really romantic prelude to the indoor activities listed below.
These also tend to burn a lot of calories, so you will be exercising and having fun at the same time!
Indoor Activities – Warm Up From the Cold
- Hot Chocolate – After all of your outdoor playing, this makes warming up that much better.
- Fire in the Fireplace – There is nothing quite like having a fire going in the fireplace to warm you up.
- Snuggling With Your Sweetie – Grab the hot chocolate, build a nice fire, then snuggle up!
- Watch a movie, play board games - One of the best things about snow days is that you get to stay home without the guilt of needing to be somewhere else. Use the time to relax and have fun.
Snow Day Activities That Cost Money
- Skiing, Snowboarding
- Snowshoeing (free if you have the snowshoes already)
- Sleigh Ride (uber-romantic)
- Ice Skating (free if you have a local pond and skates)
As adults, snow often is seen as a negative. It is a pain to drive in; you have to go out and clear off the car; if school is canceled, what do you do with the kids; there are always stupid drivers going too fast and too slow; it causes the heating bills to skyrocket…. Somewhere along the way, the magic of snow is lost. Try to reclaim some of the fun the next time it snows.
Question: What is your favorite snow activity? If you live where there is no snow, what would you like to try?

I miss skiing a lot but Steve is a snowboarder. At this point with kids, a good snowman partnered with a snowball fight is always fun.
Making a hug pile of snow and playing throw the kid is always fun and a good workout too.

Living in Georgia I never get to see snow. I do love when it does snow though and there is so many fun things to do as you pointed out. Some that I guess I will have to wait until next winter to do

I lived in Utah for several years and the April snow was always a shock and a treat. Even though we don’t get too much snow here in the Seattle area, when it does snow I love to go out and play with the kids. They love pelting me with snowballs.
Exercise and fun is a great combo. I’ve never figured out how I get so sweaty when it’s so cold.
And it’s a great excuse to make homemade hot chocolate!

These late spring snows play havoc on my veggie garden. But the added moisture is a blessing, as everything will green up quickly. That is the part that I have to remember as I’m slogging my way into work. I hope those people that got to stay home in the snowy weather had a great time.

Given enough snow and freezing weather, my friends enjoy going a frozen pond and play a game called Broom Ball… essentially… hockey without skates (sneakers/boots) and using a broom instead of a hockey stick… pads are optional!

I loved broomball (although my butt, not so much). Spent more time falling down then playing, but a lot of laughs.

My favorite way to enjoy the snow would be to see it anywhere but live and in person (television, picture or post card). I admire that you like to be cold. There are many things to do in the snow but they all end up with freezing.

There were lots of games I played in the snow when I was a kid that were free. Thanks for the reminder.

When I was a kid living in Minnesota we loved to go out & play football when it snowed because it was fun to tackle people into the soft snow.
Bonus points if you upended them so that they landed face first in the snow!!!
The other fun thing to do was to let the dog out & watch him go crazy running around biting at the snowflakes. Great free entertainment!

We alos liked to let the dog outside & watch him go crazy running around & trying to bite the snowflakes as they floated down out of the sky.
Good free entertainment!

Yes, yes! Snow angels! My late husband and I just dropped into the piles of snow by the sidewalk and spontaneously made snow angels on our honeymoon. I have those photos somewhere.
And drink hot toddies afterwards indoors and snuggle! Snuggling is free (and fun! lol)

My favorite snow activity is watching it from a nice warm room with a fire blazing and some hot cocoa and my wonderful husband right next to me!

Thank you for presenting the snowy days so wonderfully! I’m afraid the last time I lived in snow was as an adult and I had forgotten the joys of childhood which you so beautifully described.
The closest I get to the fluffy stuff now is either pulling out a Christmas card or occasionally – well not this winter – looking towards the mountains (overgrown hills with an attitude) that surround Rome – this winter there was lots of the white stuff up there!
But love the hot chocolate or hot spicey wine and fire in the hearth part of the snowy weather….!
